Returning to Reiki Self-Practice: Remembering to Care for Yourself

Reiki self-practice offers a gentle pause for self-care, whether you’re beginning your morning or settling into rest at night.

There came a point in my life when I let my Reiki self-practice slip away.

I was busy running my store, offering holistic and spiritual workshops, and providing healing sessions for others. I loved the work and the connections it brought into my life. Yet somewhere in the midst of caring for everyone else, I forgot to make time to care for myself.

Gradually, I began to feel drained by the very things that had once energized me.

When I paused to look at what was happening, I realized I had lost something important: the care and attention I gave myself through Reiki. Those moments had been a meaningful part of my life, and I missed them.

Remembering That My Care Matters Too

That realization invited me to look honestly at how I was living.

How could I assist others and teach them to love and care for themselves while continually putting my own needs aside? I wanted the self-care I encouraged in others to have a place in my life too.

It can be easy to overlook ourselves when we love what we do. There is another person to help, a workshop to prepare, or something that needs our attention. We tell ourselves we will practice later, when things settle down.

But I began to see that I needed to make room for my practice within the life I already had.

A Simple Morning and Evening Reiki Self-Practice

I returned to Reiki in a simple way.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, I gave myself a few moments of self-Reiki. My intention was to welcome energy for the day and give myself some care before turning my attention outward.

At night, before drifting off to sleep, I practiced again. This time, my intention was clearing—releasing the energy of the day and allowing myself to relax. It was a time to soothe my body and mind, acknowledge that the day was complete, and settle into rest.

These practices did not take very long. Their simplicity made them easier to return to consistently.

I already had two natural pauses in my day: waking and falling asleep. Bringing Reiki into those moments gave my self-care a place to begin again.

Giving Yourself Permission to Return

If your own Reiki practice has slipped away, perhaps you recognize something of yourself in my story.

You may still value Reiki deeply. You may offer it to others, speak about its importance, and intend to practice more often. Yet your own time keeps getting pushed to the end of the list.

You can begin wherever you are today.

If you have received Reiki training and attunement, consider returning to a familiar hand position or a short practice you learned. Allow yourself a few quiet minutes without requiring a particular sensation or outcome.

Some days your mind may wander. Other days you may welcome the stillness. Give yourself room to notice your experience with kindness.

A Small Practice to Make Your Own

You might begin as I did, with a few moments in the morning or evening.

As you wake, pause before reaching for your phone or moving into the responsibilities of the day. Follow your Reiki training and choose a gentle intention:

I welcome this day with care for myself.

At bedtime, allow your practice to mark the transition into rest:

I release what I am ready to let go of from today and welcome rest.

Let these words be a starting point. Your own intentions may feel more natural and meaningful to you.

Returning to self-Reiki reminded me that my care deserves a place in my daily life. I can love my work, be present for others, and make time to receive.

Those few moments before rising and before sleep became my way of remembering.
